Adventure outside. Balance inside.
I travel slow, by sail, on foot and in my old van, together with my dog Wingo.
Right now I'm finishing my hiking guide, Your First Hike.
Life is meant to be about living in rhythm with nature and your nature.
About
To me the whole magic of travel is to go slow, marvel and wander.
I've lived nomadic for more than 15 years. For many years it was super basic, without a shower or a fridge.
There is one constant in my life: the calling of the ocean. In, at or near the sea I'm the best version of myself. I've crossed the Atlantic five times, as crew and as skipper. In total I've sailed more than 50,000 nautical miles. That took me to every continent except Antarctica.
On land I walk. I hiked 850 km across the Pyrenees, from the Atlantic Ocean to the Mediterranean Sea. My dog Wingo joined me for much of it. By now I've walked more than 2,500 km on eleven long trails.
My van was my first car, and my first house. It has been my home base for six years now. We move with the seasons through Spain, Portugal, Morocco and the Canary Islands.
Living nomadic can throw you off more than you think. Ayurveda is how I stay grounded between continents. I trained as an Ayurveda Wellness Guide in India. Now I translate the wisdoms into tips and tricks for western explorers.
I share it all, the beautiful days and the tough ones.
Out of that came Ocean Nomads, the community I founded. It brings together people who are just as excited about nature, adventure and doing it with purpose.
The pursuit of a healthy ocean and a healthy life is one and the same.
You can prepare, plan and plot. But you still have to hop on the boat and just do it. When I started I had no sailing experience and not much money. What I did have was willpower, determination and time.
When in doubt, go into nature. It always does good. Out there the weather rules, and I have peace with that.
I choose time over money. Happiness is bigger than any bank account. You don't need to be rich in money to become rich in memorable moments.
Adventure isn't bought with money, it's chosen. If you hold a passport that lets you choose it, that's a privilege. Live it gently, without the ego.
From ocean adventure comes awareness. From that comes caring. From caring comes action.
The weather rules.
Atlantic sailing crew guide (English, 2017)
My guide to catching a sailboat ride across the Atlantic as crew. I interviewed 32 captains and 58 crew for it. More than 4,000 copies are out in the world.
Get the bookPer Anhalter über die Weltmeere (German, Delius Klasing, 2024)
In this book I tell how I hitch-sailed across the oceans. It goes from finding the right boat to life on board and why the ocean needs us.
Find the book50,000+ nautical miles
I've crossed five times, as crew and as skipper. The first time I left Mindelo in Cape Verde at the end of January 2015. I arrived in Tobago in mid February.
Community, trips and a course
Now and then we sail trips together. My Zero to Ocean Nomad course helps people get on their first boat.
850 km on foot
I walked across the Pyrenees from the Atlantic to the Mediterranean. Wingo joined me for much of the way.
Six years in the van
Most of my writing happens in the van. Nine months in Morocco over two winters became my guide, Roadtrip Morocco & Western Sahara.
Small moments
I only partner with brands I use myself, and I like to work together for the long run. You can also book me for writing commissions.
suzanne@theoceanpreneur.comLong-term ambassador since 2020
I've been an ambassador for this German water filter company since 2020. I drink from their portable filter on boats, in the van and on the trail. Thanks to it I skip single-use plastic bottles.
